I remember being twelve and having a girl I knew try to insult me by telling me that my mom had an accent, as if there was something inferior about having an accent. It had never occurred to me before that that my mother had one, and I remember getting so angry.
It's been years but I still can't hear it in my mother's voice. She still speaks English the way I've always heard it in my family, f's sounding like p's and p's like f's, quick and quiet, telling me to 'close' the light instead of turn it off.
